INVITATION:
The 2008 Annual Conference reflects ACRM and ASNR's focus on creating a dynamic, innovative, evidence-based educational conference that brings together generators, users, and funders of rehabilitation science and research in a collaborative effort. This year's theme is "Rehabilitation Research: InterDisciplinary, InterNational, InterActive." The 2008 Program Committee invites members and newcomers to join this exciting effort and submit proposals for Symposia, Morning Sessions and Research Work Sessions focusing on evidence-based medicine. Symposia proposals that include at least 1 international presenter are encouraged.

There may be limited travel support available for non-member presenters taking part in symposia.

DEFINITIONS OF PRESENTATION TYPES:

Symposia:
Symposia are 1.5 or 2 hours in length and are presented by people with expertise in the topic area. There is a mandatory time of 20 or more minutes for questions and discussion, although more time can be allotted. Desired symposia submissions are those that show how current evidence-based research can effectively guide clinical practice and identify remaining clinical questions where additional research data are needed. Authors are requested to state at least one direct relationship of a correlation between the subject matter and evidence-based medicine. Each symposia submission must describe the instructional method to be used, the content and format of the symposia, and the rational for selecting the instructional method. The number of symposia presenters can vary from one to several. The following components are encouraged: multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, at least one international presenter, and a point/counterpoint format, where appropriate, for the discussion portion of the symposia.

Morning Sessions:
These early morning sessions are 1 hour in length and can be on any topic that relates to rehabilitation science and research, as well as the users of this information (researchers, clinicians, administrators, payers, funding agencies). Topics could include "how to" presentations such as publishing in the Archives of PM&R, statistical methods, and scientific writing.

Research Work Sessions:
These sessions provide opportunities for groups to get together to the advancement or promotion of research. Research Work Sessions (RWS) may bring together people interested in developing a new instrument or treatment protocol, collaborating on a clinical trial, developing a collaborative research training program, etc. Each session must have a Work Session Director who ensures that sufficient background information is provided and clearly articulates the operational objectives to be accomplished. RWS submissions must describe (1) the importance of the problem being pursued, (2) the specific objectives of the session with respect to the problem, (3) the organizational structure and process to be used in achieving these goals, (4) the rationale for selecting this method to achieve the goals, as well as (5) identify the participants who would benefit from attending and (6) the purpose for including them (e.g., with chronic pain). RWS activities could include: collaborating on a research project; recruiting and training future researchers; planning ways to impact public policy; evaluation of clinical practices; and establishing research priorities. The sessions will be 1.5 or 2 hours in length.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
Each symposia will be reviewed for the following elements: (1) scientific and clinical quality; (2) multidisciplinary nature; (3) broad appeal to the membership; (4) timeliness of the topic; (5) contribution to the state-of-the-art of rehabilitation; and (6) the specific criteria noted for each type of presentation in "Definition of Presentation Types." Each complete submission received by February 1, 2008 will be independently peer-reviewed. No late proposals will be accepted. Applicants will be notified of acceptance or rejection by March 14, 2008. The conference planning committee reserves the right to offer alternative or reduced time slots for symposia presentations based on symposia applications submitted.

AVOIDANCE OF COMMERCIALISM:

  1. All presentations must avoid commercialism. Presentations that constitute promotion and advertising will be prohibited. This specifically includes pervasive and inappropriate use of logos.

  2. No advertising matter of any description may be distributed. No material may be displayed that in any way directly promotes the commercial interest of any particular company or enterprise, or of the author(s)/presenter(s).

  3. If the cost of presentation has been underwritten to any extent, a clear acknowledgment stating support and identifying the particular source should be included (e.g., "The support of [name of corporation/institute] for this project is gratefully acknowledged.")

  4. Statements made in presentations are the sole responsibility of the author(s)/presenter(s). Any statement made should not be viewed as, or considered representative of, any formal stance or position taken on any product, subject, or issue by ACRM-ASNR.

EXPENSES: ALL accepted presenters/authors/speakers are required to register for the conference, and are fully responsible for all of their expenses related to the conference (e.g., registration, airfare, hotel, meals).
