The 2008 annual conference reflects the focus of the ACRM and ASNR on creating a dynamic, innovative, evidence-based educational conference that brings together generators, users, and funders of rehabilitation science and research in a collaborative effort. The 2008 Program Committee invites members and newcomers to join this exciting effort and submit abstracts for Paper & Poster Presentations.

SCIENTIFIC PAPERS
A scientific paper is an oral platform presentation of a paper for 15 minutes followed by five minutes of discussion with a moderator. Outstanding submissions may be chosen for a longer presentation. AV equipment may be used to supplement the presentation. Submissions must include objectives, hypotheses, methodology, and results in the abstract. Submissions with pending results will not be accepted.

SCIENTIFIC POSTERS
Posters are graphic presentations of a scientific paper. The criteria are the same as for scientific papers.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND ELEMENTS OF AN ABSTRACT
FOR PAPER & POSTER SUBMISSION
These two types of presentations provide an opportunity to examine a specific problem area or topic relating to rehabilitation science and research. The 300-word abstract (note: any abstract longer than 200 words will be returned) for each of these presentations must follow the structured abstract format required for submission of general articles to the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair. The basic format is as follows:

Structured Abstracts: Research Articles
The structured abstract must have the following sections

  • Objective(s)
  • Design
  • Setting
  • Participants (Animals OR Cadavers OR Specimens [for orthotics only])
  • Intervention(s)
  • Main Outcome Measure(s)
  • Results
  • Conclusions
  • Key Words
Do not include a Background or a Context section in the abstract: such sections will be deleted.

Structured Abstracts: Review Articles
The structured abstract must have the following sections:

  • Objective(s)
  • Data Sources
  • Study Selection
  • Data Extraction
  • Data Synthesis
  • Conclusions
  • Key Words
Do not include a Background or a Context section in the abstract: such sections will be deleted.

Nonstructured Abstracts
The nonstructured abstract contains a narrative of no more than 250 words plus Key Words. This format applies to all submissions to the categories Clinical Notes, Special Communications, and Commentaries.Previously presented abstracts may be submitted with appropriate acknowledgment, however, work previously published in manuscript form cannot be accepted. In meeting the submission format, authors should consult the Archives' Information for Authors, which is available quarterly in the journal (January, April, July, and October) and at www.archives-pmr.org/apmr/info.html. The Information for Authors describes what is required in each heading and suggests ways to condense the narrative (particularly in the headings Design and Setting). Click here to download a sample abstract. Or you may obtain a copy by contacting the ACRM National Office at 317-915-2250.When preparing an annual assembly abstract, authors must abide by the following guidelines.

  • Authors may not add new or alter existing subject headings.
  • Authors may not add an introductory passage to precede the Objectives. Such remarks are more appropriate at presentation.
  • Authors must spell in full, on first introduction, all acronyms or abbreviations used.
  • All numbers should be presented in Arabic numeral form, including numbers from 1 to 10.
  • Authors should provide no more than 3 key words, 1 of which must be rehabilitation. Key words selections must be based on the National Library of Medicine's Permuted Medical Subject Headings, which is available at: www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/Mbrowser.html. Nonnative English speakers must have their abstracts edited prior to submission by a native English speaker.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Each abstract will be reviewed for the following elements: (1) scientific and clinical quality; (2) broad appeal to the interests of the membership; (3) multidisciplinary nature; (4) timeliness of the topic; (5) contribution to the state-of-the-art of rehabilitation; and (6) the specific criteria noted for each type of presentation in "Definition of Presentation Types." Each complete submission received by March 16, 2008 will be independently peer-reviewed and rated on a blind evaluation basis. First Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by May 1, 2008.

AVOIDANCE OF COMMERCIALISM

  1. All presentations must avoid commercialism. Presentations that constitute promotion and advertising will be prohibited. This specifically includes pervasive and inappropriate use of logos.
  2. No advertising matter of any description may be distributed. No material may be displayed that in any way directly promotes the commercial interest of any particular company or enterprise, or of the author(s)/presenter(s).
  3. If the cost of presentation has been underwritten to any extent, a clear acknowledgment stating support and identifying the particular source should be included (e.g., "The support of [name of corporation/institute] for this project is gratefully acknowledged.")
  4. Statements made in presentations are the sole responsibility of the author(s)/presenter(s). Any statement made should not be viewed as, or considered representative of, any formal stance or position taken on any product, subject, or issue by ACRM and/or ASNR.
