Tuesday, October 6

8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
Brain Injury Pre-meeting Symposium - Day 1 of 2

Phases in the Rehabilitation of Individuals with TBI: From Disorders of Consciousness to Comprehensive Outpatient Cognitive Rehabilitation

Day 1: Building Novel Assessment and Interventional Technologies in the Rehabilitation of Individuals with Disorders of Consciousness

Faculty: Ron Seel, PhD, Steven Laureys, MD, PhD, Adrian Owen, PhD, Nicholas Schiff, MD, John Whyte, MD, PhD, FACRM, Joseph Giacino, PhD, FACRM, Joseph Fins, MD, FACP, Doug Katz, MD, FACRM

Clinical/Research Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to: Recognize the indications and limitations of behaviorally-based assessment techniques in evaluating individuals with disorders of consciousness. Explain the utility of functional neuroimaging procedures in defining the neurophysiologic substrate underlying disturbances in consciousness. Integrate behavioral and neuroimaging techniques to better inform clinical practice and approaches to research. Describe mechanisms of arousal regulation and therapeutic opportunities for neuromodulation. Outline the bioethical implications of emerging diagnostic and interventional technologies.

Clinical/Research Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to: Describe the key elements of a research proposal. Conceptualize and write their own research question, corresponding aims/objectives and if indicated, testable hypotheses. Identify funding mechanisms specific to their individual research project.
Sessions will include: Elements of a good proposal, five models of rehabilitation research careers and funding mechanisms. See page 5 for details.

Clinical/Research Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to: Present rationale for developing an International SCI Motor Data set. Define the elements that are included in a complete motor assessment. Initiate formation of a working group to develop an International SCI Motor Data set. Discuss possible future research collaborations.

12:30 PM – 5:00 PM
SCI Pre-meeting Symposium - Session II

SCI Rehab: How Clinicians Spend their Time with Patients and How it Can be Documented Efficiently

Faculty: Gale Whiteneck, PhD, FACRM, Julie Gassaway, MS, RN, MPH, Audrey Natale, PT, DTP, Teresa Foy, OTR/L, Andrea Schwebel, MA, LPC, LPA

Clinical/Research Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to: Develop a taxonomy for characterizing the treatment interventions (activities and their associated details) conducted by each discipline in the SCI rehabilitation team. Design and implement an electronic system using personal data assistants (PDAs) to document treatment interventions after each patient session. Collect adequate data to report the details of the SCI rehabilitation process.
