The Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level. The faculty member is expected to establish a world-class, active, and independent program of extramurally funded research in an area closely related to biokinesiology, which is the integrative study of the causal links between biological mechanisms and purposeful movement. The focus of biokinesiology is on understanding how the human body adapts to growth and experience as well as to injury, disease, and aging. In addition to research, the faculty member will teach in the biokinesiology and/or clinical physical therapy programs, and will be expected to contribute to faculty and University governance. Our search is broad as we seek to attract a leader in general areas of exercise science, muscle physiology, neuroscience, biomechanics, motor development, and physical therapy clinical science including health outcomes. A major objective of the Division is to develop a strong association between basic and clinical research, and also to build collaborative and interdisciplinary research programs in an area of rehabilitation-related science to complement research strengths and ambitious goals of the Division and University at large. Indeed, the University strongly encourages interdisciplinary research arrangements. An earned doctoral degree is required and, for new investigators, a promising publication record and some post-doctoral research experience are essential. Evidence of teaching aptitude and ability to attract funding are also desirable. It is not necessary for candidates to be physical therapists nor is it necessary that candidates currently reside within the United States. The Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at USC is ranked #1 in the country due to its wellestablished 65-year history of teaching excellence and research innovation and impact. The Division, which is administratively housed within the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, is located on USC’s Health Sciences Campus, and enjoys collaborative relationships with the other disciplines of the academic health center including medicine, occupational science and occupational therapy, pharmacy, biometry, and preventive medicine. The USC University Hospital, the LA County + USC Medical Center, and the USC Norris Cancer Hospital are also part of the campus community. Our faculty have strong collaborative relationships with academic programs located on USC’s University Park Campus including the Viterbi School of Engineering, the School of Gerontology, and various Departments in the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. The Division has more than 300 students engaged in graduate study in either the PhD and MS programs in Biokinesiology, Doctor of Physical Therapy program, or clinical residencies in orthopedic, neurologic, and sports physical therapy. Our Division leads and is affiliated with multiple large externally funded research centers of local, national and international scope. The Division’s faculty is comprised of basic scientists, applied researchers, and master clinicians working in close partnership with community practitioners. The faculty clinical practices operate in acute care and outpatient settings at the University Hospital, as well as in a network of private practices. Teaching facilities are modern and include spacious teaching laboratories, and two state-of-the art lecture halls. Faculty research facilities include motion analysis, exercise science, neuroscience, motor behavior, muscle physiology, molecular and cellular biology laboratories and the new Bice Clinical Research Center. Salary and rank will be based on qualifications and experience. The university provides an excellent benefits package. For full consideration submit applications by October 1, 2010. The position will be available as soon as early 2011. Candidates should send letter of interest and curriculum vitae to: Carolee Winstein, PhD, PT, FAPTA Information about the Division can be obtained at: http://www.usc.edu/pt/. The University of Southern California is an Equal Opportunity Employer that Values Diversity. Women and members of unrepresented minorities in science are strongly encouraged to apply.
The University of Michigan Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) invites applications for a junior faculty position, Assistant Professor in the instructional track, in the area of clinical rehabilitation robotics research. The ideal faculty member will provide both research and clinical experience related to this field and will work with an interdisciplinary team of faculty from the Departments of Mechanical Engineering (Mechatronics), Biomedical Engineering (Brain-Computer Interface) and the School of Kinesiology (Biomechanics) to design, test and study the application of robotic devices in rehabilitation. The clinical expertise of the individual being recruited could be as a physiatrist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, prosthetist, or orthotist. The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. or an equivalent degree with substantial research accomplishments for rank related to rehabilitation robotics. It is possible that the candidate would have a Ph.D. without a clinical degree, but he/she would have demonstrated experience working with patient populations for their research. The ability to work in a team environment with multidisciplinary collaborators is also critical to this position. Experience with intervention studies involving outcomes of active therapy modalities, endurance training, or strengthening after the implementation of assistive technology, orthoses, protheses or robotic devices would be highly desirable. The position will fulfill a key need in the Department of PM&R to expand its research portfolio while also developing expanded collaborations with University of Michigan faculty outside the School of Medicine. Preference will be given to candidates that hold a clinical license or can be licensed in the State of Michigan. Individual and team research will both be goals for the new faculty member. The hire will work on a collaborative team with other PM&R faculty and staff as well as with the other Rehabilitation Robotics faculty hires. It will be important for the faculty member to develop her/his own research program in a therapeutic context as well. The hire should be able to evaluate strengths and needs of patients as they interface with robotic technology with the goal of improving their overall physical functioning. She/he will have a mature and creative perspective regarding the functional relevance of technology, robotic devices and robotic training to compensate for loss of limb mobility, movement and/or strength. The faculty member would aid in the education of medical residents, orthotist and prosthetist residents, and medical students. The faculty member may not have a regular course load but will provide selected lectures and mentoring in her/his primary area of expertise. For more information please contact: Denise G. Tate Ph.D., Professor and Associate Chair for Research, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at dgtate@umich.edu or call (734) 936-7052.
