Elizabeth & Sidney Licht Award

Elizabeth & Sidney Licht Award for Excellence in Scientific Writing

Sidney Licht, MD, was a longtime member of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and was its president in 1967-68. He was the editor of the Physical Medicine Library, which was published by his wife, Elizabeth. Their address at 360 Fountain Street, New Haven, CT, was synonymous with physical medicine and rehabilitation throughout the world. The Licht award was originated in March 1979 when ACRM's Board of Governors approved the following motion:

"The Elizabeth and Sidney Licht Award is established to give recognition of excellence in scientific writing in rehabilitation medicine. Accordingly, the Licht award is proposed to select a paper which, having been recognized as presenting potential significance and empirical and theoretical contributions to rehabilitation medicine, and soundness of methodology and data analysis, receives a special recognition of excellence in scientific writing."

It was understood that only papers published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation were to be eligible for the award and responsibility for annually selecting the winning manuscript was given to the Archives ACRM Editorial Board along with the ACRM Awards Committee. Dr. Licht was so pleased with the Board of Governors' action that shortly before his death in March 1979, he made a gift of $10,000 to the Congress to support the award. It was first given in 1980 for an article published in 1979. That pattern has been continued; the award is given in the current year for the best scientific article published in the previous year in the Archives. Licht award recipient have been:
